“Where creativity goes leadership follows – as long as you are inspired.”

I have always found that creativity leads to new areas of leadership – not the other way around. People recognize creativity and they follow inspiration when they see it. I never thought I would spend nearly 20 years in the technology field, but I realized that people knew exactly where I fit: leading and motivating others to succeed, finding the right talents and connecting them to the right people/customers and partners, and positioning people and programs to stakeholders in all sides.

Where others were consumed by worry about keeping their management positions, I was too busy to think ahead and make my teams feel proud of what they were delivering. I posted thank-you notes regularly as we reached milestones, and ensured top performers received personal recognition, coaching, and guidance.

I did it because I cared. And because I cared, I received new opportunities and my career evolved on its own volition. Naturally, I wanted to keep a high quality, and I worked hard. I didn’t expect from anyone anything more than I expected from myself. But I kept artistic creativity always as part of my repertoire. The combination opened doors to new programs and new opportunities. And so I could only conclude that creativity leads the way, and leadership follows as the skills evolve.

I am sure you have had similar experiences when you allowed your talent to evolve in addition to areas otherwise considered as “core industry” skills.

“Leadership is not about a title or a designation. It’s about impact, influence and inspiration. Impact involves getting results, influence is about spreading the passion you have for your work, and you have to inspire team-mates and customers.”
~Robin S. Sharma
