The Baby Shower Cake
“What fun is life, if we cannot laugh at ourselves – laugh with others – and smile through the tumult of circumstances well beyond our control. Humor may not save our lives, but it does greatly improve the quality.” ~ Maria Lehtman
Au contraire to my usual, calm and well-thought-out nature photography – I thought an exception might make the rule. My photography peer blogger, Cee, has interesting photography challenges, this time under the theme ‘Odd Ball Photography’.
If anything, this photo represents a very special moment in my life, and a challenge is quite different from my normal daily activity. The cake design took hours to complete for my sister’s baby shower. As the fairie-god-mother (a title I take with conviction) I naturally offered to host the event, and little did I realize what the “baking” actually required.
I rarely bake, and I have even less experience doing it with diapers – so this one was a double challenge. The Paddington I had acquired from London with the little key as well (on his chest).
The version #1 of the cake fell flat, so I actually had to turn to my engineer-minded husband for help, and he advised me to just roll up all diapers individually. So there I sat, on the living room floor, for several hours wrapping up every single diaper individually tied with a blue ribbon for the ones on top layers and golden for the ones on the inside (blue for the boy and gold to represent the golden heart & soul, naturally).
And my sister diligently had to, later on, unwrap them all. But she was very delighted and was in awe of the cake design. Edible or not.
What you don’t see in the image is the cool rock-snoopy i.e. Cool Joe with his little shades on (given the “cake” was to a boy whose father is a heavy rock fan).
The boy turned out to be an asteroid-speed-type personality, fun-loving, energetic, creative, and all-out-curious about anything moving and technical. And loving all things fuzzy. So I imagine this was the right cake. At least, it always makes me smile when I see the image.
