Thailand. Phuket. A study of shadow movement. Transient.
“Our fear of the unknown is the first door we need to walk through. It is the stargate to our truest form. Transcendence to a better life. One that is never easier. Yet, it is the only life worth living.” ~ Maria Lehtman
The magical future beyond our comfort zone
When I was thinking about transient – this image was the first one that came to mind. Despite the limits of my physical comfort I have traveled several long haul trips during the years. I never regret visiting Phuket although I ended up spending 24 hours in the international hospital for severe dehydration due to a stomach illness. If you ever need a hospital, it was one of the most comfortable ones to be in.
We took a series of photographs on the beach in Phuket with my husband right after I got out of the hospital. I felt so relieved to be outside again that despite the ordeal I felt completely at peace. Our flight back was scheduled the next day. I was lucky enough to recover so quickly that we could be on it. If my fever had not gone down, they would have kept me in the hospital. I was scheduled to fly out again three days later on a business trip in Iceland, so a delay was not really an option.
For a Nordic traveler, Phuket offered wonderful warmth in the middle of the November chill. Creativity in photography springs from the least expected moments. Our mind is a mysterious realm. It has the capacity to experience ultimate fear and panic only to find joy, comfort or peace when things fall back into place.
For anyone afraid to push your comfort zone and step into the unknown, I can only tell you that it brought me many happy memories. I always knew there was something more challenging looming in my future. After training my mind to overcome fear, it opened the door to self-transformation. It never brings quite what you expect. It does bring you strength though – your mind is always stronger than your body. Always.
“My work is about my life as an event, and I find myself to be very temporal, transient.”
~ Duane Michals
